Lake Mainit Integrated Area Development

Background

The project is the second of two (2) IAD project in Region 10 which NACIAD PREPAED IN 1983, the other being the Bukidnon IAD Project now seeking ODA funding through the initiative of the Local Government. Despite NACIAD's abolition in 1986, both the Provincial Government of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte pursued the proposal and eventually secured funding from the office of the President in 1989 for FS preparation. The first draft of the study was complete in August 1991, was revised and resubmitted in March 1994. The project's cost structure was further updated on NEDA's recommendation, resulting to a downscaled version.

The previous study proposed a cut-off open channel as a main project which will lower the lake by about 3 meters and to be able to reclaim an area of about 2,500 hectares. However, the Agusan Power Corporation and the Cumming Cockburn Limited of Ontario, Canada as Build-Operate Transfer (B.O.T) taker had now completed the feasibility study. The taker of the project is busy completing the Environment Impact Assessment (E.I.A) component as a requirement of the DENR. The cost of the project was not included in the cost analysis.

The Lake Mainit Integrated Area Development has a total land area of 128,175 hectares which covers fours (4) municipality for Agusan del Norte and four (4) municipality for Surigao del Norte.
