Butuan City is situated in the northwestern part of the
CARAGA Region (Region 13). It is the seat of government
and serves as trading center of the region. It's strategic
location makes it the natural gateway to the different parts
of the country. It is home of the "Balanghais" or "Butuan Boats",
the famous pre-historic native boat in Southeast Asia.
The place is one hour and forty-five minute ride from
Manila and fifty-five minute ride from Cebu by plane.
By sea, the city is 36 hours and 12 hours from Manila and Cebu
respectively.
The major potential of the city is in food processing.
Supply of raw materials for processing activities, especially
banana, coconut, coffee, fruits, root crops and prawns,
are projected to accelerate with the increase in agri-
fishery production in the whole of the region and
neighboring provinces.
Wood will still be a major industry, but this would primarily
involve the utilization of plantation species.
Small and medium industries will also find place in
sub-contracting activities with the expected spill-over
from the manufacturing plants in Cebu or Manila and
neighboring Cagayan de Oro.
Tourist accomodations and reacreational facilities will also pose
great demand with the newly created regional center, and the fad of mall
shopping will make commercial centers a profitable vanture
in the city.
