EASTERN VISAYAS CHAPTER LAUNCH PETITION SIGNING CAMPAIGN

Region VIII affiliate unions overwhelmingly responded to the petition signing campaign for a package of additional benefits including a demand for salary increase. It was an offshoot of an all leaders’ forum attended by 20 union leaders representing 14 local unions of the Eastern Visayas Chapter. The meeting also adopted a resolution calling for a review of the GSIS Law.

They also recommended forwarding the petition to the National Office in support of the planned lobby work of the Center for its proposed legislative agenda concerning public sector issues and concerns.###

COURAGE ROC IV AT NPDCEA POOK NI MAKILING MEMBERS' ASSEMBLY

The Regional Organizing Committee of COURAGE in Region IV took part in the members assembly of NPDCEA Pook ni Makiling last July 24 in Los Banos, Laguna. The activity, initiated by NPDCEA Board of Directors members Rex Badrina and Fe Barrinuevo, focused on the discussion on the challenges confronting the public sector employees under the Estrada Administration.

Mr. Willy Apinado, ROC IV coordinator presented the region's plans and enjoined the participation of the union. Likewise, COURAGE 1^st Vice President, Beth Nuyad, outlined the sectoral campaign against mass lay-off and for a P2, 500 base pay salary increase.

NPDCEA leaders from the main office were also present in the assembly represented by Ka Luis Bandal, Willy Ballesteros and Hector Patawaran.###

REGION VI CHAPTER TO HOLD CONGRESS

As of this writing, preparations are on going for the Regional Congress of Western Visasyas which will be held on August 12 to 14 at the Shamrock Beach Resort in Guimbal, Iloilo.

With the theme: "Learn from the lessons of a decade of militant, progressive, and nationalist unionism in the public sector; Struggle for the rights and welfare of public employees and for social change" the Congress shall be attended by representatives from the 15 affiliates covering 4,000 members across the region.

National President Ferdie Gaite shall provide a lecture on the national situation and the challenges confronting the public sector employees under the Estrada Administration.###

The officers and member unions of COURAGE salutes COURAGE Region V.

After embarking on a series of education seminar on Public Sector Unionism, Leadership Formation Course and consultations with the local union leaders, Region V is now a full-fledged Chapter with Provincial Organizing Committees (POC) in Sorsogon, Camarines Sur and Norte, Catanduanes and Albay. Its first regional conference took place last April 18 in Pili, Camarines Sur.

Prof. Joel Batanes of Camarines Sur State Agricultural College (CSSAC) was elected as Chapter Chairperson. Other officials include Joven Laura (Sorsogon Municipal Government), Aida Mendevil (Gubat Sorsogon Municipal Government), Allan Sabaybay (NFA), and Ella Chavenia (Sorsogon Water District).

Currently, their efforts are geared towards the formation of the Provincial Organizing Committee in Masbate and in providing assistance to their new affiliates.###
