![]() Gotu Kola Gotu Kola has gained popularity worldwide for its reputation as a nerve tonic to enhance memory and promote relaxation. It is sometimes called "food for the brain" or "the arthritis herb". Gotu Kola has been found to significantly increase the production of collagen, the key to the synthesis of the connective tissues surrounding the veins. The improved collagen allows brain capillaries to be protected, thus, increasing mental alertness. It also contains many nutrients that support the body’s vitality and feed the nervous system, including vitamins A, B, E and K, and magnesium. Despite what its name suggests, it contains no cola or caffeine. One to three freshly chopped leaves daily in salads or liquefied in juice are said to be sufficient to "retard the ageing process." Some people simply munch on the leaves. Semi-aquatic, it likes to grow in the ground in moist soil, preferably in partial shade although it also manages well in full sun. You can also grow it in containers provided it’s wide enough to give the plant room to spread and you make sure the growing medium doesn’t dry out. Except for the rare person who is allergic, no significant adverse effects are experienced. However, it is still advised that if gotu kola causes a skin rash, dermatitis or headaches, one should lower the dosage or stop taking it. Avoid gotu kola if you are pregnant or nursing, or using tranquilizers or sedatives. This herb should also not be used by anyone with an overactive thyroid. Do not give gotu kola to children under two. (P) |

Pennyroyal Used to be a favorite ingredient in pudding until it was discovered that many people developed allergies to it. Pennyroyal is a mint that repels insects, especially fleas. Vacuum your pet's bedding thoroughly then rub the bedding with a handful of fresh herb or sprinkle with dried herb. For a homemade flea collar, roll pennyroyal leaves in a piece of cloth and tie around your pet's neck. You can also apply leaves to insect stings (provided you’re not allergic).
