It takes a long time to retrieve my e-mail...
Connection timed-out...
Q1. It's taking an incredibly long time to retrieve my e-mail. It usually just takes
seconds! The status bar indicated 'message 4 of 7'. What could be wrong?
A1. This usually happens when somebody sends you a huge file attachment. It could
be a program, a picture, who knows. If your e-mail program has an option that skips big
messages, cancel mail retrieval now and enable this option. You may then e-mail or call
our 24 hr. technical support hotline at 411-2000 and request that we check the problem
or delete the e-mail file and possible file attachments.
Q2. When I start to retrieve my e-mail, it stops and then a message 'Connection
timed out" (message may vary) appears. Sometimes, a message "cannot find skyinet.net"
comes out. What's happening?
A2. This happens when your e-mail program can't seem to find the address of our mail
server caused by slow transmission or sudden modem slowdown. Make sure that POP server
is set to pop.skyinet.net and SMTP server to mail.skyinet.net
Q3. I received an e-mail with a file attachment, but all I get is garbled text/code.
Why?
A3. Garbled attachments are usually caused by:
The settings of the e-mail program of the other party could be wrong. You have to
choose between MIME or Binhex when attaching a file. It really depends what file you're
going to attach.
There could have been a glitch along the way that caused loss of data. This will
cause garbled file attachments since the program did not recognize what type of file
was attached.
Attached files could have originated from different operating systems (i.e.,
Windows, MacOS, etc.)
Q4. I received a returned mail. Why?
A4. These are the three most likely reasons:
The e-mail address of the other party could be wrong. There are some e-mail
addresses that carries a format (like those mail for Compuserve or AOL)
The address could be right, but it might not be existing anymore. Make sure to
enter the correct e-mail address of the other party. When you reply, their address
automatically comes out. Be sure to double check if it's correct before you send.
The ISP or mailhost that address belongs to is temporarily down. The return message
that you received is only to inform you so you really don't have to resend the message
because the server will keep on trying that host for four days. If four days has
already passed and the message is still not sent, the server stops and considers the
recipient's host as down.
Q5. How can I add an additional e-mail account and how can I use them?
A5. The SUPPORT SECTION provides a facility (requires sign-in) where you can
create and delete multiple e-mail accounts. There you will be asked for the new
e-mail account name, the real name, and a password. So make sure you have these
information ready to save you online usage time. Just follow the easy steps and viola,
it's done. To use the new e-mail accounts, make the necessary changes in your mail
program.
Q6. I have a primary e-mail account for personal use and I've created an additional
e-mail account for office use. How can I keep my personal and office mail from getting
mixed-up in one folder?
A6. You will have to specify another mail directory in the e-mail program you are
using.

Q7. Can I change the password for my additional e-mail account or delete an
existing e-mail account?
A7. Yes! You can either change your e-mail password at our Password Modification
utility or go inside the Multiple E-mail Account Administration utility under our Support
Section. You can also delete your alternative e-mail accounts at the same module.
WARNING: If and once you delete an e-mail account, all mail and files attributed to
that e-mail address will also be deleted. You CANNOT delete the primary e-mail account
(same name as the login name) though.
Q8. Is there a chance for my e-mail to be lost?
A8. Well... yes! This seldom happens though. There's a possibility that
someone may have retrieved your e-mail already and accidentally deleted them, or you
may have sent it to an address that no longer exists or has been deactivated. It's
also possible that there were glitches in the mail delivery process.
Q9. How do I attach a file to my mail and how do I read them?
A9. In your mail program, find an option that could set an attachment to your
e-mail. If the program has an Attachment button, click on it. It will ask you what
file you want to attach.
Viewing attachments simply depends on what file type the attachment file is.
No matter what the file is, make sure to remember its filename. The attachment file is
usually found at your Mail Directory. To help look for that file, use a file search
tool in your system.
Most browsers have the capability to translate and display text and images.
Simply open the file using the file menu or drag the file into the browser window.
If the browser is able to translate the file, it will display it instantly. These
technique works even with normal files found in your hard disk.
Q10. What is the CC: for?
A10. For example, you wrote a message and you want to send this message to
several people. CC: is where you place the rest of the e-mail addresses of the
people you want to send this message to. It's like making a Carbon Copy. E-mail
addresses placed at CC: is usually separated by commas.
Q11. What does the error message "unable to copy mailbox to spool/tmp" mean?
A11. This means that you have an overloaded mailbox caused by large incoming
files, old mail left in the mailbox or mailbombs. We have set a 4MB limit to your
mailbox which is large enough for most users. This is to protect you from mailbombs
and other unsolicited mail. If this happens, please call or e-mail the 24 hr.
helpdesk and we'll assist you in downloading them.
Q12. How do I avoid mailbox overload?
A12. Here are three ways to avoid mailbox overload. ONE, after retrieving
your e-mail delete it from mail server by enabling your e-mail program to "remove/delete
mail after retrieved from the server" option. TWO, refrain from sending or receiving
mail over 4 MB in size due to the quota (see A12 above) set for each mailbox. THREE, be
selective when subscribing to mailing lists to avoid receiving spams (see next) or
junk mail.
Q13. What is "spam mail"?
A13. No, it's not something your computer can eat. Spam mail is a message sent to
multiple e-mail addresses even if the mail was not requested. This does not necessarily
mean that annoying, off-topic or silly e-mail are considered spams. The content of the
e-mail is irrelevant to classify it as one. It is the VOLUME of the same mail sent out
to different e-mail addresses.
Q14. What is "flame mail"?
A14. Flame mail is verbally abusive e-mail. They are offensive in nature and,
if you let it get to you, can really ruin your day.
Q15. What can I do about spams and flames?
A15. If you're a SKY Internet customer, forward these messages to: abuse@skyinet.net
We will attempt to trace its origin and help you execute the appropriate action
to prevent it from happening again.
