Q1. What's the meaning of upload and what can I use it for?
A1. Upload means to transfer files from your computer to our server. As a SKY
Internet subscriber, you have been provided with your own home directory with an
assigned webspace. This can be used for your homepage or a place where documents can be
stored.
Size of webspace is based on the type of SKY Internet subscription package you have
signed-up for (see Products & Services section of this site for more details).
Q2. Can I upload using my SKY Internet? How?
A2. Yes. To upload, just follow these simple steps:
FIRST, you must have an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program in your PC. This will
enable you to access our server while you're connected to us. FTP programs are available in the software page
NEXT: Setup and run your FTP software.
Use the same login name and password (primary account).
Our server address for your file uploads is:
www.skyinet.net.
The program will proceed to connect to our server.
You will automatically land at your home directory the moment you connect. Once
you're connected, you should be able to see your home directory. You may now transfer
your files.
Q3. What is the opposite of upload?
A3. Download, which means to transfer files from a remote system, site, or server
to your computer.
Q4. What can I download?
A4. There are countless files and goodies you can download from the Internet.
Usually software companies provide a Download page where you can get the latest software.
SKY Internet has an extensive Software download section optimized for subscribers.
Almost all images and content in a site can be downloaded as easy as dragging it
from your browser's window to your hard drive or by following the easy steps below.
Please be aware though of copyright and intellectual property restrictions when doing so.
Q5. Sounds great, so how do I download files using my SKY Internet?
A5. To download, follow these simple steps:
Go to a particular URL or site that offers software downloading.
Downloadable files are often represented by links which you may click on to start
the downloading process. Your computer will display a save option dialog box. It will
ask you where you want to save the downloadable file in your computer.
(Choose a path and subdirectory, preferably an empty directory or folder which you
have pre-created. This will ensure that when you uncompress the files, it will not mix
with other program files. Always remember the filename and location where you saved the
file.) Downloading starts the moment you see a percentage meter. It shows the approximate
download time. Once the download process is finished, the file should be found at your
chosen target location. All you have to do now is to run the file.
NOTE: If it is a compressed file (ex. *.zip, *.arj), you need to decompress it first
into a normal file in order to use it. Usually, it automatically expands by itself.
If not, you will have to do it manually by clicking on the file or opening it from your
compression program.
Q6. How long does it take to download a 1MB file?
A6. The time varies depending on several factors:
Wider bandwidths will speed up downloading time.
It also depends on your PC and modem. Of course, a fast PC with a fast modem is
ideal. A fast PC but a slow modem will slow down the process since data transfer is
limited to your modem speed. A fast modem but slow PC will slow down the processing
time of data received by the modem to your PC.
It also depends on the quality of the phone line connection. No matter how fast your
PC and modem are, if the phone line connections are sub-standard, data transfer rate is
reduced.
Q7. While I was downloading a big file from the SKY Internet Software Page, I keep
getting disconnected. What could be the problem?
A7. Downloading a big file can be cumbersome. It will, at times, test your patience
and require you to have the discipline of a Zen monk while waiting for large files to
completely download.
The disconnections are caused by several factors: It could be poor lines, it could
be a glitch in your modem, or our ftp server could be resolving some technical issues.
When you're trying to download a large file, stay cool. Also, be prepared to
confront possible glitches that might require you to start all over again regardless
of the downloading time you already went through. Try also downloading during off-peak
hours when phonelines are clearer and bandwidth is wider.
Q8. I'm an Internet Explorer user. When I try to download a file, I get this message,
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site. The server returned extended
information." What's wrong?
A8. Try following these steps:
Go to View then Options. Choose Connection.
Mark the option "Connect through a proxy server".
Click Settings. Mark "Use the same proxy for all protocols"
At Address of proxy to use, write: proxy.skyinet.net with port no. 3128 then click OK.
