Be nice
1. Create your web page.
Creating your web page is probably the hardest part of putting up a website,
but there is plenty of help available if you search the Net. If you want to create
your own page without learning HTML (HyperText Markup Language is the program code that
a web browser needs to display a webpage), you can use a WYSIWYG program like
Claris Home Page or MS Front Page.
(You can download a selection of free HTML editors from our Software Page.
Download time optimized for subscribers.)
2. Upload your web page.
The next thing you need to do is get your webpage from your computer to the
SKY Internet webserver.
You do this by using FTP.
Some things to check before you upload:
Make sure your main page is called index.html
Make sure all your filenames are in lowercase letters. Don't use spaces in your
filenames, use an_underscore instead.
Don't use periods, commas, or tildes (.,~) in your filenames.
Make sure HTML files end in .html and graphics files end in .gif or.jpeg.
Be sure to include all graphics files referenced by your web pages, and that
the case in your HTML matches the case in your filenames.
Depending on the FTP Program you are using, things may vary slightly. (e-mail or call
the helpdesk at 411-2000 for assistance.) Two of the most common FTP Programs
are WS_FTP or Fetch (you can download these and others from our Software Page)
In general, the FTP Program will need to know a few things in order to connect to
the SKY Internet web space and transfer the files correctly.
Host Name/Address = www.skyinet.net
Host Type = If you are behind a
Firewall, you will probably need to use Passive Mode, otherwise it does not matter
User ID = Your SKY Internet Username (primary account)
Password = Your SKY Internet dial-up Password
You should be able to connect to the SKY Internet website with only this
information. Once you have logged-in, go to your public_html directory and follow
the instructions for your individual FTP program on how to upload all relevant
files here.
3.) SKY Internet subscribers are provided with webspace in our webserver.
The amount of space (in megabytes) depends on the SKY Internet subscription package.
If you attempt to upload beyond the allocated space, the server will reject the
file(s).
Please clickover to our Products & Services section for details on webspace allotment based on subscription package.
4.) CGI Scripts
Please review the policies before submitting the CGI to us. Submit it by e-mail
and file attach the files. SKY Internet will load these scripts to the web server.
You will be informed by e-mail when your scripts are ready.
5.) Try browsing your home page.
The official location (URL) of your homepage will be:
http://www.skyinet.net/~username/
6.) Webpage add-ons.
For those who want to install counters, dates, and clocks in their web pages,
SKY Internet has a special web utility that you can use.
NOTICE :
Please make sure that your homepage does not contain obscene or offensive text,
language, images, or materials.
SKY Internet reserves the right to deny server space to webpages that are deemed
immoral or inappropriate.
