Venue

The International Conference on Conflict Resolution, Peace-building, Sustainable Development and Indigenous Peoples will be held in Metro Manila, Philippines.

The conference venue will be at The Heritage Hotel in Pasay City, Metro Manila with the following address:

The Heritage Hotel is 30 minutes away from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

 

Arrival and Departure

Participants are requested to arrive on December 5, 2000.  A Conference staff bearing a placard with the sign Tebtebba  will meet participants in the airport lobby after clearing customs.  Taxi services, costing around $6.00 - US$7.00, are also available.

Departure is on December 9, 2000.

IMPORTANT:  Please inform us about you flight schedules in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made for your pick-up to and from the airport. 

 

Visa and Travel

For those requiring visas, kindly contact the Philippine Embassy nearest to you. We shall be sending you by fax, e-mail and surface mail, invitation letters to facilitate your visa application. .If you need additional help from our end, kindly contact us through the following:

For those who are being funded by Tebtebba, kindly take the cheapest economy round trip airfare. We shall be reimbursing your travel expenses so kindly inform us beforehand of the exact costs. Do not forget to bring your receipts and plane tickets since these will be necessary for the reimbursements. Please make your bookings as soon as possible.

 

What to Expect/Bring

November is the start of the cool months in the Philippines.  Please expect warm temperature in the day but cooler periods at night time.  You may bring light clothing for your use.  

While a medical doctor will be on hand for emergency needs, we would request that participants with specific medical needs bring their own medicines.

Kindly inform us of your dietary restrictions/needs (whether vegetarian, no pork, etc.) so we can make the necessary arrangements.

We are also encouraging participants to bring with them audio-visual materials and publications which they can share in the conference.  Part of the evening sessions will be reserved for film showings on topics relevant to the conference theme.

 

Side Activity

There will be guided visits to some Cordillera communities before and after the conference. The areas to be visited will be in the mining communities of Mankayan and Itogon, Benguet where visitors will meet with representatives of indigenous peoples’ organizations who are struggling against mining corporations.

Another site is Dalupirip, Itogon which is the affected site of the San Roque Dam Project. There is also an ongoing struggle between the indigenous peoples and the dam consortium which is composed of a Japanese (Marubeni) and an American energy corporation (Sithe Energy Corp.) These visits will be organized by the Cordillera Peoples’ Alliance.

The options for the side activities are as follows:

Option 1. December 1-5   Dalupirip

Option 2. December 9-13 Dalupirip

Option 3. December 9-16 Dalupirip and Mankayan

The weather in the Cordilleras is very cool, so please bring additional jackets.  A profile of the communities will be posted in this site in the coming days.
